The Carl Haglund Foundation

A business leader and philanthropist in Seattle, Washington, Carl Haglund has headed the real estate development company Columbia Modern Living since 1982. He is also the founder and chief executive officer of the nonprofit Carl Haglund Foundation.

As part of its efforts to provide viable solutions to the homelessness problem in the Seattle area, this foundation funds organizational grants and releases public reports and videos such as “Rental Laws Gone Wild.” A short documentary, “Rental Laws Gone Wild” examines the failures of Seattle’s existing rental laws to protect the rights of an organization that wants to donate property to benefit members of the city’s homeless population. The video shows how a single rent-negligent resident, who has faced and defeated numerous eviction attempts despite not paying rent for a year, has prevented the Carl Haglund Foundation from donating a housing facility to Weld, a nonprofit that houses recent prison parolees in the Seattle area. The facility could potentially house as many as 16 Weld program clients.

Weld Works Seattle Offers Second Chance

An accomplished Seattle real estate professional, Carl Haglund has nearly 40 years of experience leading Columbia Modern Living as president and CEO. In addition to pursuing development opportunities with the firm, he aims to address problems in the Seattle housing market, specifically helping Seattle residents who have experienced opioid addiction or homelessness secure safe, stable housing. To that end, he established the Carl Haglund Foundation in 2020.

Individuals who have been incarcerated are more than 10 times more likely than the general population to experience homelessness. The foundation is in the process of partnering with Weld Works, a Seattle organization providing second chances for formerly incarcerated individuals to help them rebuild their lives and contribute to their communities. The Haglund Foundation is preparing to donate a housing complex to the Weld nonprofit.

Weld Works operates Weld Seattle Housing, a membership-based transitional housing program that provides accountability and support for formerly incarcerated Seattle residents. Their membership fees pay for rent, and they are expected to contribute to all aspects of home maintenance and renovation. IN addition to providing transitional housing, Weld Works connects clients with mental health services, financial aid, and legal assistance.
